Live Trace

Jaime Smith

Cat

This is a very simple live trace of a cat. I have never used the live trace tool before, so I chose a simple drawing because I didn't really know how it would turn out. I also played with gradients a bit, which I don't use often. In order to allow gradients to go in different directions, I learned that layers must be separated. The original drawing came from a clipart site on Google.

Eskimo Rimhatchi

This is a live trace of a drawing from my sketchbook. The subject is my character Rimhatchi from the game Minecraft. Rim = yellow (Na'Vi from James Cameron's AVATAR) and Hatchi = bee (Japanese). Though she normally wears yellow and black, she is wearing brown eskimo garb because she's stuck in a harsh snowstorm.

I kept the actual character drawing very stylized, only shading where I could use the bucket tool to fill in the entire area. I experimented with stroke shape for the snow and trees. I also used gradients for the snow, tree trunks, sky, and clouds. I created the clouds using the circle shape and pathfinder tools. The flurries of snow were created with the blob brush tool.
