Laser Cut

Laser Cut: Wings
Jaime Smith

My laser cut encompasses a personal project. I have created winged animal beings that belong to different classes, and each class is represented by a different wing type. This project gave me the motivation I needed to actually draw out what each class' wing type would look like.

02 Devil

03 Fallen

04 Fairy

This is the sketch I started out with for my laser cut.

I drew in the rest of the hair and the details in the hair in Illustrator. I'm going to have light pink underneath the hair and black for the outlines and parts of the face. I had some trouble getting all the shapes in the hair smoothed out.

Laser Cut

I'm still experimenting with video game design, and I decided to use a robot character as my next subject. So, I came up with the idea of a giant robot containing a city within its one, large eye. I wanted to create a literal sense of depth in the artwork, and in order to achieve that, I'll stack 6 layers of thick paper on top of one another, cut away the top layer to reveal the robot itself, cut the bottom 5 layers to reveal the city in its eye (the second paper layer will reveal the front layer of the city, and so on).

So for my laser cut image, I decided to use one of Rebecca Taylor's laser cut examples that she have displayed on her website http://rebeccataylortextilesurfacedesigner.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html She is one of the artist that our professor introduced us to when we were in class looking at different pieces that we could use for our artwork. I found her artwork to be fascinating to me, so I decided to check it out. I decided to use this image because i thought that it appeared to very detailed and easy to draw as well.

(So for this piece that i completed on illustrator, everything that i had outlined in orange is what i am going to take out and leave everything that has been outlined in white).

Laser Cut

The original photograph is was taken myself of a doll I've had since birth named Nya. I did the tracing in parts. The first layer will be her face, then her hair, and then her scarf. The final piece of paper is the black background.

This is the redone version of the original in adobe illustrator. It took me a ton of time because each path duplicated itself inside the shape so it took forever to fix.
This is the original, I tried to go off contour lines but I then realized that with the way the laser cutter worked it would not have worked out.

Laser Cut

This is my original and finished drawing for the laser cut project. It is a sketch of a man stranded on an island with a broken surf board with a huge wave rising up in the background behind him. The biggest issue I had with this picture was making sure all the lines connected other than that it was a fairly simple image.

This is my original drawing for the Laser Cut project. It is an elephant with a half living and half dead tree.

"One With Nature"
This is what I will be laser cutting. I didn't have really any difficulties, but I did end up removing the back leg from the elephant because it is more atheistically pleasing this way.

Sorry in advanced for all of the separate pictures. But I 'm making a flower out of these 5 petals and the single bird drawing is going to be the center of the flower. Each petal is going to be cut out on separate sheets of paper that are different colors. I'm not completely sure of what colors I want it, but I do want it to flow from color to color around the flower.

Lasercut

My lasercut image comes from a photograph I took in Fells Point on a day in early springtime this past year. When I walked by this fenced-in truck parking lot, the bright color scheme hit my eyes, and the large blocks of color with the touch of typography appealed to me for potential art or design inspiration. When I tried it out for the lasercut image, I saw that even without the colors, the design looked kind of abstract and interesting. I also thought that the fence, which would be left visible (white), would physically help keep together the rest of the white parts as a kind of net. For the final physical art piece I will experiment with ways to show the blue, red and white colors behind the cut-out paper.

What I struggled with in doing the lasercut in Illustrator was simply understanding the way positive and negative space would work with this image, and getting the hang of altering the live-traced image. If I had more time I might have added more detail in the sky and the truck surfaces.

I call this Electric Forest. I named and designed it based off of a song entitled Electric Forest by I See Stars (ft Cassadee Pope.) It's pretty much my favorite song ever so I wanted to dedicate something to it.

This Is a stylized illustration of the legend of Troy depicting Helen Menelaus and the golden apple as well as many other poetic elements found in the story.  I chose this subject because there were a lot of interesting visual elements to the story and I wanted to make something a with clear, relatable, and epic meaning to it.
